Heraldic Staff of the
NZSCA College of
Heralds
The New Zealand SCA
is currently divided into three independent groups, and there are a number of
active heralds in these and their dependent subgroups. All members of the
populace are encouraged to partake in and use heraldry; not just in creating
the glorious banners and items of heraldic display but also participating in
the specialised duties of the College of Heralds.
There are three broad aspects to the heraldry duties of the College of
Heralds:
a) Voice Heraldry
Including the announcing of tourney
bouts, calling of the hours, and delivery of messages and announcements to the
populace
b) Book Heraldry
The
preparation and verification of name and armoury submissions to the College of
Arms
c) Court Heraldry
Assisting Their Majesties and/or
Their Excellencies in Their Courts with announcements, ceremonies and litanies,
and recording the bestowal of awards and maintaining the Orders of Precedence
Many heralds will often have a preference and a
special skill in one of these areas. Often they will want to develop and be
involved in the other areas though this is never compulsory (but often desired
in Group heralds!). But an aversion to one type of heraldry should never keep
people from volunteering for other heraldic duties… and there is always plenty
of work to be shared around!
There are several ranks within the Kingdom of Lochac’s College of Heralds based on Position held and the relative expertise:
